Mac Microphone or Camera Not Working? Fix Permissions First

A camera or microphone that suddenly goes silent in one app, while the Mac otherwise works fine, is usually a permission problem rather than broken hardware. Check permissions first, then the app itself, before assuming a repair.

Follow these steps

  1. Check the app's own audio and video settings. Open the app's settings and confirm the correct microphone and camera are selected. Many apps remember an old headset or external camera that is no longer connected, and simply point at the wrong device.
  2. Check macOS privacy permissions. Open System Settings, then Privacy and Security, then Camera, and confirm the app is switched on. Do the same for Microphone. macOS blocks access by default until you allow it, and updates can reset this.
  3. Quit and reopen the app after changing permissions. Permission changes often need an app restart to take effect. Quit the app fully, reopen it, and test the camera and microphone again before trying anything else.
  4. Test in a different app. Try the camera in Photo Booth and the microphone in Voice Memos. If they work there, the first app is the problem; if they fail everywhere, the issue is system-wide or hardware.
  5. Check for a cover, mute, or hardware switch. Remove any camera cover, check for a mute button on a headset or external microphone, and confirm the camera indicator light. A physical cover or mute is easy to overlook and looks exactly like a software fault.
  6. Restart the Mac and update the app. Restart to clear a stuck audio or video process, and update the app and macOS. Audio and video bugs are often fixed by updates, especially after a system upgrade.

What NOT to do

  • Do not grant camera and microphone access to every app that asks. Allow only apps you actually use for calls, meetings, or recording.
  • Do not install a driver or utility that promises to fix a built-in Mac camera. The built-in camera needs no third-party driver, and such tools are often unwanted software.
  • Do not ignore a camera light that turns on unexpectedly. Quit apps that should not be using the camera and check permissions.

If the camera and microphone work in a test app after a permission fix, you are done. If they fail in every app after a restart, a hardware check is the next step.
