How to Make Phone Text Bigger and Easier to Read
Squinting at small text is tiring, and it is also unnecessary: every modern phone lets you make text bigger across almost all apps. This guide changes the size once, in the right place, so you do not have to zoom in app by app.
Follow these steps
- Increase the text size in display settings. On iPhone, go to Settings, then Display and Brightness, then Text Size, and drag the slider to the right. On Android, go to Settings, then Display, then Font size, and move the slider up. Most apps will use the new size immediately.
- Make text bold for extra clarity. On iPhone, switch on Bold Text in the same Display and Brightness screen. On Android, look for Bold text in Settings, then Display or Accessibility. Bold text is easier to read at the same size, especially in bright light.
- Increase the overall display size if text alone is not enough. On iPhone, go to Settings, then Display and Brightness, then Display Zoom, and choose Larger Text if your model offers it. On Android, go to Settings, then Display, then Display size, and move that slider up too: this enlarges buttons and icons as well as text.
- Set a shortcut so you can adjust size quickly. On iPhone, go to Settings, then Accessibility, then Accessibility Shortcut, and add Larger Text or Zoom, so triple-clicking the side button opens the adjustment. On Android, add Text and display size to your quick settings or accessibility shortcuts if your phone offers it. A shortcut means you can adapt the phone to your eyes in seconds, anywhere.
- Check your most-used apps after changing the size. Open your messages, email, and browser and confirm the text is comfortable. A few apps use their own text settings and ignore the system size: check inside those apps' settings if one of them still looks small.
- Turn on extra accessibility options if you still struggle. If larger text is not enough, turn on Zoom or Magnification in accessibility settings, which lets you magnify part of the screen on demand, or increase contrast and reduce transparency to make text stand out from its background.
What NOT to do
- Do not rely on zooming in with your fingers in every app. A system-wide text size change is faster and applies everywhere.
- Do not set text so large that buttons and menus become unusable. Increase it step by step until it is comfortable.
- Do not assume an app that ignores the system size is broken. Check that app's own settings for its text size option.
Once the size is right, it stays right: the setting applies across the phone, and you can fine-tune it with the shortcut whenever your eyes are tired or the light changes. If one app still looks small, its own settings are the last place to check.
