How to Stop Mac Notifications From Interrupting You

Notifications are meant to help, but when every app chimes in, they steal your attention all day. The fix is not to mute your Mac forever: it is to let the important few through and quiet the rest.

Follow these steps

  1. Turn on a Focus mode for work or quiet time. Click the Control Centre icon in the menu bar, then Focus, and choose Do Not Disturb, Work, or another mode. Focus silences most notifications while still letting you allow specific people and apps through.
  2. Set a Focus schedule so you do not have to remember. In System Settings, then Focus, select a mode and add a schedule for your work hours or bedtime. Scheduled Focus turns itself on and off, which is far more reliable than remembering to toggle it.
  3. Choose who and what can break through. In the same Focus settings, add allowed people and apps, such as calls from family or messages from your team. Everything else waits quietly until the Focus ends.
  4. Turn off notifications app by app. Open System Settings, then Notifications, and go through the list. For noisy apps, turn off banners, sounds, or badges, or set them to deliver quietly in Notification Centre without interrupting you.
  5. Stop notification sounds and badges for the worst offenders. If an app is useful but chatty, keep its notifications in Notification Centre and remove its sound and badge. You still see its alerts when you check, but it no longer pulls you out of your work.
  6. Check Notification Centre instead of reacting instantly. Click the date and time in the menu bar to open Notification Centre and review what arrived. Batching your checks this way restores focus without making you miss anything important.

What NOT to do

  • Do not turn off all notifications and forget about them. You may miss calendar reminders, security alerts, and messages that matter.
  • Do not silence a messaging app completely if people rely on it to reach you urgently. Use Focus allowances instead.
  • Do not install a third-party notification manager to do this. macOS already has Focus and per-app settings built in.

If your Mac is finally quiet during work hours, you have the balance right. If something important still slips through, add that person or app to your Focus allowances rather than turning everything back on.
